We have noticed a definate change in the scenery as we head west. Nebraska still had a lot of trees, but nothing like the eastern states. South Dakota has far fewer trees....only one here as far as we could see.
After an overnight stay in Oacoma we continued west toward the Badlands. We stopped at a prairie homestead and there were tons of these little Prairie dogs. The babies were a little shy.
But Mom really liked peanuts...
More babies.
The sod house was very interesting...
Then we drove into the Badlands.... It was awesome to look at. They were doing road repair and we ended up on a dirt road for about 15 miles...ugh!

We stopped for lunch at Wall Drug. We have been seeing signs for it for 500 miles.

Russ adoped a new pet...I told him we couldn't take him home because we don't have a big enough litter box.
Ted Hustead, a pharmacist, and his wife bought Wall Drug Store in 1931. Wall was a small, poor town and business was bad. They often gave away medicine to the towns people that couldn't afford it. There was seldom anyone from the highway that stopped. His wife suggested that they put a sign on the highway offering free ice water. He thought it was silly, but he did it anyway. When he got back from hanging the sign there were so many people in the store that his wife couldn't pour water fast enough. Of course a lot of the travelers also bought ice cream or other things. Within a year he had to 8 ladies to help in the store because he had so much business.

It was a fun place...and of course we had some free ice water.
We drove up into the Black Hills, set up camp and took off for Mount Rushmore. It was amazing. There was a group of men working on top, and rappelling down the front of Jefferson.
We saw some mountain goats there. We left to have dinner, then returned for the evening show. The ranger spoke for a few minutes and then we saw a film about our great America. That was followed by a flag ceremony led by all of the veterans and active military in the audience, it was touching, a great reminder of the sacrifices that are made for our freedoms. Then they turned the lights on the 4 presidents...beautiful!
