This is the view that we woke up to on Saturday. I wish you could hear the water. So peaceful.
We drove to Palmyra New York. This is the view from the Hill Cummorah. It was very steep. We walked up 2 sets of stairs and realized how much hill was left, so we went down, got in the car and drove up.
The monument of Moroni is at the top of the hill. Moroni was the last Nephite. He hid the record of his people in this hill, and later appeared to Joseph Smith and showed him where it was. Joseph translated this record and we know it as the Book of Mormon.
We drove three and a half miles to the Smith farm. This is the log home where they first lived.

Sister Anderson gave us a very nice tour. I can't imagine living in this small cabin with 9 kids.
Walking down the pathway we spotted something in the grass. There were 3 baby foxes playing. They really didn't care that we were there and let us take pictures.

The Frame House...the Smith family moved here from the log house. Joseph and Emma lived here for a while after they were married. The Gold Plates were hidden under the brick in front of the fireplace to keep them from being stolen.

When Joseph was a young boy of 14 he wondered which church he should join, as each church taught their own doctrine and none of them agreed as to what was right. He went into the woods behind his home to pray and as he pleaded for guidance, he saw God the Father and His Son Jesus Christ. He was told not to join any church at that time. Later he received additional information that led to the restoration of the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the earth.
We don't know exactly where in the woods he went, but as Russ and I sat there and thought about where it could be, we noticed that all the sounds of the world were gone...we could no longer hear the cars on the road or the people on other tours talking. It was easy to see why he would come here to pray as it was so quiet and peaceful.
This is where Martin Harris's home stood. In it's place stands this house made out of river rock that was hauled miles by wagon. There were 700 river rock homes built in this area.

This cute girl is from Tonga and is serving a mission here. She explained to us how the Book of Mormon was first printed. All the type had to be set by hand. It took 10 men working 12 hour days, 6 days a week, seven months to print it. They printed 5000 copies in that first printing.
There were so many old churches in this area. I can understand how it would be difficult to choose one.
On Sunday we attended the Palmyra Ward. Then we went on a tour of the Peter Whitmer Farm. This is where the church was officially organized. There were 50 or 60 people at that meeting...in this room...
There were 6 official members...but many more were baptized in the river that is about a quarter mile behind this cabin.
