Russ is waiting for the trolley to come in Yorktown, Virginia. This is the sight of the last major battle in the Revolutionary War. As we drove around the area we could see trenches and mounds out on the battlefields that were used in the war to protect the soldiers.
This monument was pretty awesome. It sat at the beginning of old Yorktown. Many of the old homes were open so you could walk through. The town sits on a bluff just above the beach which was crowded with people enjoying the sun.
We also went to this Maritime Museum. We thought we were just going to kill an hour, and then take a cruise up the Chesapeake Bay. But once we got in there we didn't want to leave. 5 hours later we still didn't get to see everything.
This is the glass lamp/lens from a lighthouse (Russ just told me it's called a flensel lens...only he would know that) It was so pretty. There was a huge part of the museum that had to do with the Monitor and the Virginia (formerly the Merrimac). They were the first 2 iron clad ships ever built. They were used in the civil war. These two ships went to battle against each other and neither ship could sink the other. They also had a huge room with ship models that were hand carved and built by a man named Crabtree. Amazing!!! He is still building them at 75 years of age.We had a really fun day!
We have noticed some things about the south...From Arkansas to Virginia... 1st - There are a ba-zillion churches. Some fancy, some quonset huts with steeples, but they are everywhere. We passed through one town that had like 8 buildings in the whole town and 4 of them were churches.
2nd - They apparently like breakfast, alot. There are so many pancake and waffle houses here.
3rd - The southern people like their fun...there are a lot of go cart places, arcades, carnival type rides etc.
And just in case I haven't said it before...it is VERY beautiful here!
