We were driving through the Pennsylvania countryside on our way to Valley Forge. The homes were huge, and beautiful.

Driving country roads you just never know what you'll find. We came upon this little covered bridge and were very glad that we left the RV at the campground.
All of the original cabins at Valley Forge were destroyed, but the National Park Service built cabins all over the valley to the same specifications that the soldiers used.

He refused to take property from the citizens like the British troops, so he rented this home from the owners.
More cabins...They were only about 15' by 15' and housed 12 men.
There were deer everywhere. We get so excited to see deer or chipmonks, or squirrels. People look at us like we are nuts when we stop to take pictures or watch them. We have to explain that we don't get to see these things in southern California.
We left Pennsylvania and headed for New York. Pennsylvania is beautiful, but it has been the hardest state for us to navigate. There are so many little roads, not always well marked, and there doesn't seem to be any system to their numbering.
Camped in Newburgh, New York. Got up super early on Tuesday April 21, to catch the train for New York City. Bought tickets for a hop on hop off tour line. Our first hop off, the Empire State building.
We went to the top.....and saw the whole city.
This fence is covered with tiles that have messages on them about 9-11. A sort of makeshift memorial.
This is a piece of a globe that used to be in the courtyard of the World Trade Center. The World Trade Center site is surrounded by high fences, they are building new towers there.
We took a ferry over to see the Statue of Liberty. The boat was really crowded, but it was a short ride.
The Statue was amazing. We only got to walk around the base of it. They only allow a few people a day to climb up inside, and it was booked up for weeks....we aren't staying around here that long.
At this point in the day, my camera decided to die. We took a second ferry to Ellis Island. You can read hundreds of stories from the immigrants that came through there. Amazing, joyous, sad, frightening, the people were so happy to come to America. The land of promise, but most came in poverty, and lived here in poverty.

We were told that it would be difficult for us to see everything in one day. We were told to expect a wait of a least an hour to get through security at the Empire State building, and 2 hours to get through security for the Statue of Liberty. We breezed right through he Empire State Building...no waiting at all. The Statue of Liberty we waited maybe 5 minutes and then made it on to the first boat....we were told it would take us at least 3 hours to get there, and we made it in 30 minutes. Our tour guide said that he had never seen so few people. We were listening to the news after getting home, and they said that Pres. Obama was coming to New York today to the same areas that we were in yesterday. We are so glad that we are not there today...
We took the train back, and we were very happy to see our car waiting for us, still in one piece.
